Inspiration and muses

Jan 31, 2012

Photo via Pinterest

I believe that inspiration and muses go hand in hand. Today I’m proposing we join our bestest examples of interior design pictures or inspirational artifacts to make a big inspiration board. I’ll select a few ones to design this board and share with others your link or page with the photo you post. Lets roll those muses! Underneath this post is a “add your link” bar (besides the froggy). Push the bar and follow the instructions for submitting your pic. On the name line try to put something that describes your photo or your website name. After this you will be redirected to select a thumbnail from the link you posted. If any questions, let me know.

Ikat, you-kat, we all-kat for Ikat

Backsplash from New Ravenna Mosaics; Swatches from Jo-Ann; toss pillow from the Etsy store Pop O’Color

No, it is not chocolate! This marvelous and popular fabric is gaining a lot of fame in the interior decoration world. Now a days it is very common to find this textile in toss pillows, upholstery chairs, and even in the runways. But what exactly is Ikat and were can you buy it?

From a pouf, to a baby room

Jan 30, 2012

I've always been a huge fan of Moroccan poufs. When my second baby was on its way, I didn't have a clue about how to decorate her room (shame on me being an interior decorator!). The only thing I was sure of was the fact that I wanted one of those beautiful and brightly colored pouf. And as you are guessing, I ran I bought one. Now, how do I decorate a room base only on one circular Mediterranean small ottoman?
It is a big dilemma when we get dazzle up with an item and from there, sometimes we don’t have an idea on how to select the rest of the pieces for a particular area on our home. I had the same difficulty when I started with my pouf. But I figured I had to go with something else and decided to start looking for fabrics.
In a nursery room the possibilities of textiles are endless. I found on Etsy several merchants that made customized crib bedding. After searching for fabrics here and there, I ended up with Lil' Slumber because, even though, they didn't carry the textile I wanted, they got it for me.
1. Fabric from Fabricworm 2. Moroccan pouf from Baboucheshop
As you can see from the picture above, the fabric I selected had almost the same pattern as the yellow pouf. From here on, selecting the other items was an easier task. There is a repetition of form through most of the pieces I selected for my baby room. This form is the circle. One would have thought that putting circles all around will end up looking to crowded. But the truth is that it all will depend on the way the circles are put together. Here are samples of where you can find this form throughout the room. Seeing it as a whole will give you and idea of how to make a subtle repetition.
 1. Owl decal from Pier1 2. Red circular garden lamps from HomeGoods. 3. Circular drawer pulls.  4. Die-cut plywood wall decor
Another thing to considered when organizing or decorating a room is the color. Color plays a big role in the space. Keep in mind that a color can make a room look smaller or bigger. But if you are not so sure as if to put certain hues on your walls, keep it simple and use it on your pieces. In my baby's room I opted for some white colored walls because my items were very bright and vivid. I left these items be the main characters of the room instead of the walls. As you can see, color also was a repeated element on the room. It was present on the crib bumper, on the owl decals (which are also of circular forms) and on the crib skirt. Always remember to pay extra attention to repetition and color. Both of these elements of design can make a room look beautiful and organize at the same time. If you have a dilemma like mine, please feel free to write to me so I can help you out!

Natural streaks

Jan 26, 2012

By now I will assumed that everybody knows about Pinterest. I have a dear friend whose newest hobby/addiction is this website. For her, it is a love and hate situation because she really loves the site, but hates the long hours she spends there day dreaming an pinning.

For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity of visiting, Pinterest is like a giant inspiration board in which people from around the world post photos they find interesting for others to like, repin, or just drool over. The themes are very diverse but well categorize. You can find your dream living room but also a good recipe for tonight’s dinner.

If you’ve never been there, make sure you have a friend who has because it is with invitation only that you can access this blissful place. If you can’t find a friend over there, send me your email and I’ll make sure you get your VIP pass.

Update: My Rothko painting

Jan 25, 2012

Just a quick post to show you where I placed the Rothko painting. I really love how up close you can see the brush strokes. It really adds dimension to the painting. Isn’t it incredible what some watercolor old brushes and a left over wall paint can do? As always, this is my ever changing nook so here you’ll often see something new. Let me know what you think.

Brilliant accents

Jan 23, 2012

You might think that my obsession with lamps is growing stronger, or that I’m suffering from a Target-Fever. Well, I guess you are right. My latest discovery comes from the floor to the side tables and is brightening every corner of our houses.

Instead of MoMA, try Wynwood for a change

Art is on the air, and in the Wynwood Arts District, it’s on the walls. Just a glimpse and you’ll know that it is one of the best Graffiti places in the state. The colors and designs off all of these talented artists make any size canvas feel obsolete. Here is a very small sample of what you can encounter there any day of the week.

From my garden, with love

Jan 19, 2012

On one of my trips to Marshalls heaven, I found a pair of garden lamps. At that time I was pregnant with my second baby and thought that this could be transform in lamps for her room. But how to do that? Well, here is how I did it.

1 owl, 2 owls, 3 owls...collections

Jan 18, 2012

How much is too much? Lately I’ve found myself collecting owls. I don’t know why but almost anything owl-like, grabs my attention. I try to display them in different areas to mentally deny my craze. But surely enough, it only takes a trip to Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters or Pier One to remember myself  ”I need just another one”.

Vintage-fying a mirror

Jan 17, 2012

Recently I decided I needed some new vintage-thing on my surroundings. Looking for ways and ideas, I stumble with different tutorials to make a mirror look old. But most of them were either to difficult or expensive.

My version of a Rothko

Jan 16, 2012

Looking on ways to update my special “ever changing” nook, I decided that it was time to wake up the “sleeping beauty” artist inside of me. I remembered that on an art class I always admired the paintings of Mark Rothko. His colored blocks, of different sizes and hues, brought me a feeling of calmness. I loved that those master pieces always seem so balance even when the blocks were not of the same dimensions.

This weekend is the Miami International Art Fair. This event is going to take place from January 13-16, 2012 aboard the SeaFair, a luxurious yacht at the International Hotel Dock.

Spoted color in: West Elm

A few days ago I needed some inspiration so took a ride to one of my favorite stores, West Elm. It’s been a long time since I visited this marvelous space, so you could imagine my excitement. One of the best things West Elm has is the distribution of its space. You can find little nooks packed with lots of creative ways to resolve your everyday design dilemmas.

Trend alert: animal abstraction

Jan 11, 2012

Today, dress in my best 007 attire and with baby in cart, I arrived to Target (Tarjay to others) to see if I could find one of those Ikat toss pillow. To my disappointment, I couldn’t find any. Already there and with dreams crushed, I decided to take a last stroll down the isle of Home Decorating.

Once there I notice a rare but magnificent new trend… animal figurines. But these were not your typical animals. These were abstraction of them. Knowing how much my follower love to be on trend alert (an putting my prestige in danger) I decided to take my camera-like-gadget and post some of this exhibits. Hope you like them!!!

From nature to decoration

Jan 10, 2012

I once had a professor that taught me how to perceive a picture or a surface and then transform it into an area. For the first couple of weeks in his class, I remember pulling my hair out thinking on ways to do this and trying to make sense to the meaning of his words. But finally, it hit me.

Exhibit A: Entryway

Jan 9, 2012

A good friend of mine came with this photo asking for some suggestions. Here is her description of the picture as emailed:

The basket you see on the ground is from West Elm, and I got it to place my internet equipment. Also, the long black cable needs to be replaced with a white one and be stretched and pinned to the wall. Lastly, the table is actually a desk from Ikea that I put together as well as the mirror”.

Color picking

Recently I went to Kentucky to spend Christmas with my family. While being there I notice that trees, flowers and skies were of a different tone and color. But surprisingly enough with their grayish hue, I loved the colors around me. So I dedicates some time to take pictures of these contrast of color in the nature.

With pictures in hand I thought to myself “wouldn’t this photos inspired a space?”. Well of course they can and it is the easiest thing to do. I’m going to show you how to use those very special pictures you have taken and wish you could translate them into color, or even decoration.

Celebrating the glitter

Jan 8, 2012

A couple of days ago I received an email from Decor8 inviting bloggers out there to participate in a Discomania Virtual Blogger Party. This is a virtual gathering for us, people that love to blog with only one condition… the dress code had to be sparkly, sequin-like… DISCO…

So my mind went nuts trying to figure out how to mix Interior and Graphic Design with the Disco theme. Suddently it hit me, “John Travolta in the movie Saturday Night Fever”

Dancing John Travolta

So now that I have the dressing code ready, I had to add some glitz. Down came the disco balls. But wait, were is the Interior Design component? Easy, wall paper. Since I was running out of time and a bling-bling wall paper is a little expensive, I looked for something similar, gift wrapping paper. To my good luck I found some golden glittery one at Michael’s.

So the only thing missing was a couple of vases with the same sparkly effect and remembered that I had some nice ones from previous projects. So, all done. Now here is the final result of my (made by me) shooting.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Even mi little one sneak in!

Remember to visit the Discomania Virtual Blogger Party either on Decor8 or in their Pinterest board and say hi to all the wonderful worldwide bloggers out there.
