A soft transitional decor in a little girl's room

Mar 5, 2015

Experience have taught me that sometimes in order to create a great and functional room, organization is always the key. I had the privilege of working with a lovely family who wanted to make a soft transition from a nursery to a younger looking room for their daughter. This little girl had the most beautiful fairy style decor but her mother's desire was to create a contemporary space fit to her child's age.

After sourcing through some furniture, we all agreed on a white classic style which will permit this room to change through time and grow with the girl. Gray and vintage rose were the basic colors used to generate a spacious feeling in this small room.

As a mom, I know sometimes toys and playtime can get out of hand. To resolve this dilemma I offer my client several organizational options. As you'll see from the before photos, the shelves were full of plush toys. By using baskets I was able to provide a clean look without throwing away any of the toys.

The mirror behind the headboard helped this room feel more airy but at the same time carried the abstract flower them repeated in some of the elements used.
I really enjoyed designing this room, from the selection of each piece, to the styling process. Let me know what was your favorite part in this room. I always enjoy reading you!

Creating a fresh look for Spring

Creating a fresh look for Spring (mantel)

Perhaps Spring around Miami is the same as Summer or Autumn. Over here you'll probably notice a slight change in temperatures but other than this, most leaves stay the same color. But because of my constant need to decorate and move things around our home, Spring is a season that has arrive home and is spreading pretty fast.

Creating a fresh look for Spring (mantel)

First stop, my mantel! I've placed two of the HomeGoods wall arts I used over my benches (on our master bedroom) and they quickly change the whole look of my living room. White Atelier Stella's planters from West Elm with a real orchid and some air plants, were also place here. I couldn't resist placing some blooming branches (from Trader Joe's) to create a visual balance.

No, I only need to replace my sofa cushion covers and probably the curtains. Any ideas here?
What are you doing to refresh your home for Spring? I would love to hear your ideas.

Quick and inexpensive DIY chest transformation

Feb 25, 2015

Ikea chest transformation
My favorite part of this chest (besides its beautiful color) are the teardrop pulls from Hobby Lobby.
Making a budget friendly room transformation is not that difficult. With some inexpensive art, some paint and a new comforter set I was able to change the whole look of our master bedroom. On my previous post I stated that the the furniture was making this room appear smaller that what it really was: it was a dark chocolate color and the chests were too tall for the space.

Inexpensive Ikea chest transformation

I knew this piece of furniture had to go, but I needed a similar (perhaps smaller) option with a comfortable price tag. Knowing that Ikea never fails, it only took me a visit to find the perfect Tarva drawer chest. Because it was made of natural solid wood the painting options were unlimited.
To make the big change, I went with some wood stains; the first couple of coats were in Minwax "Classic Gray", and two more coats in Verathane "Golden Oak" both available at The Home Depot.

I love how the grains of the wood still show through the tint.
A change of drawer pulls was all that it needed to be completed. I found some vintage looking ones at Hobby Lobby and they had this perfect teardrop style which I completely love.
Our new drawers look spectacular and the color went perfect with my HomeGoods lamps and Kenroy Home Reyes mirror.

Let me know what you think of this chest transformation. As always I LOVE reading all your comments.

A bright and more spacious master bedroom

Feb 19, 2015

Bright Master Bedroom decor

When we first moved into our new home, our master room became my favorite place to hide leftovers from the other rooms. As you can imagine, this place became dark and crowded with barely any space to be creative. An organizing/decor intervention was more than needed in this room.
My first approach to make this space look bigger was to bring in a pendant lamp. I wanted it to be big but at the same time elegant. I found a great option from Kenroy Home called Apothecary with a curved form and a look reminiscent of an old time. Because of the clear glass, the light bounces around the room achieving that bright and spacious feeling this room craved.

My old comforter also needed a replacement. So I took a quick visit to my nearest HomeGoods where I found a new set of sheets, the art you'll see over my nightstand tables, a set of bright yellow decorative pillows; besides the colorful comforter.

Besides the unnecessary stuff we had in this room, the furniture was also making this space seems dark. Changing the headboard to a fabric one from BHG at Walmart made all the difference. A new natural wood drawer chest from Ikea (and some wood stain) also helped freeing the room from all the clutter.

Hope you enjoyed this room makeover and stay tuned for some hints on how to achieve some of the looks I used here.
